Can Token Burns Get Out of Hand?

Author: Spaceshib

So far, the burn agenda couldn’t be more clear - let’s burn some sanity into that insanely huge Shiba Inu supply! Nothing like fire to set things right. There’s, however, a small catch that seems to have been eluding community-wide mention.

To put it bluntly, token burns are irreversible; once burned, them tokens can’t be “unburned.” That said, there must be a day coming, if still a good way off, when $SHIB burns should start to be extra careful, so as not to “overburn” the token straight into supply deficiency. This gives rise to a simple question.

Where’s the end of the line for the burns, i.e. at what point should the burns chill out and have a break? What’s to stop a theoretical ‘rogue’ burn project from burning on while everybody else has stopped?

Consider the following scenario: Projects X, Y, Z are in the business of burning $Shib and everything is cool for a while. Soon, their combined effort has managed to slim that supply down enough that everybody should be happy. Now, let’s say Project Y is absolutely on fire and can’t keep its hands off the flamethrower, ignoring  both pleas and threats to chill out. Worse yet, the splinter project now has a bunch of loyal supporters, enough to keep the burning alive regardless of whether projects X and Z support it or not.

That's a recipe for one nasty “Shibocalypse”, don't you think? Now you’ve got a huge internal beef within the community, with thousands of people pointing fingers, flipping their lids and generally going nuts. How should we all act in that situation, if at all?

A few ideas come to mind; none is 100% foolproof.

One solution would be to have a very clear “end goal” agreed upon by everyone within the community. Then again, nothing to stop one project from changing their minds at some point - it’s not like they are breaking the law.

We could also try to have some kind of "Burn Police" keep a sharp eye out on the others and call out rogues should any such entity deviate from the Path of Righteousness. But, come to think of it, that’s exactly how tyrannies are born: one day they’re true to their creed of conduct, the next day they’re drunk on power.

Last but not least, we could just let things flow the natural way and hope that the token’s supply itself will be the major stopping factor for the burns - a day in the future when there’s just enough supply to satisfy an ever-growing demand that none of the burn projects would have the nerve to continue. Then again, different people might have very different ideas about when enough is enough.

It sucks not to have an emergency handbrake capable of bringing the whole thing to a halt should any such need arise, but that’s just how self-governing communities work.
